Really Good Pubs

In 2023 I am going to be highlighting a couple of pubs from the East Midlands which in my opinion are really good.

Each pub will have its own illustration, walk and products that highlight why it is really good pub.

The Plough at Wysall

March

On the Nottinghamshire/Leicestershire border, the Plough at Wysall is well known for it's STUNNING garden. So much so that my Dad renamed it Lanzarote and I think it has a good ring to it...

The Walk

The GREAT Lanzarote Walk

This walk is 11.1 km circular trail starting and ending in Wysall.

It is considered a moderately challenging route and takes an average of 3 h 16 min to complete so make sure you've got sturdy boots on.

Please also remember to always pick up your dog poo and put your dogs on leads when around livestock or walking through farms.

The Plough is open Midday - 11pm, is veggie and dog friendly and stops serving food at 2.30pm so make sure you take that into consideration when planning your walk.

The map below also has a QR code that takes you to the exact walk on All Trails where you can find GPS tracking.

The Griffin at Swithland & Swithland Woods

April

Found in the heart of Charnwood Forest you will come across The Griffin in Swithland. It's location, food and cosy fires give the pub the true atmosphere of a countryside inn.

Swithland Wood is part of the Bradgate Estate and is managed by the Bradgate Park Trust. As a remnant of the Charnwood Forest Oak Woods, Swithland consists principally of mature oak, birch, alder and lime, which support a rich variety of butterflies, moths and birds.

The Walk

Swithland Woods Walk aka The Brilliant Bluebell walk (in Spring)

This walk is 5km circular trail starting and ending in Swithland.

It is considered an easy route and takes an average of 1 hour to complete. There is uneven terrain so make sure you've got sturdy boots on.

Swithland woods has many routes to offer and Bradgate Park is easily accessible from the South exit on Roecliffe Road.

Please also remember to always pick up your dog poo and put your dogs on leads when around livestock or walking through farms.

The Plough is open Wed-Sun with food hours varying, has veggie and vegan options and is dog friendly in the hard floored areas. Please go to https://www.griffininnswithland.com/find-us for more info on opening hours.

You can also use www.footpathmap.co.uk/ to follow your GPS when walking this route.

Really Good Pubs

What and Why is this collection?

What makes a really good pub?

Well, that's obviously a matter of opinion and of course every body has their own point of view but for me it's about  the interior, it's friendliness to dogs, a fire/log burner (depending on the season), a great beer garden, village history, village locals, a good walk and good food.

What makes me the expert?

Nothing, I'm no expert I just really enjoy them and want others to too.

Why this project?

A couple of reasons really... I was brought up in a small village with a pub in the heart of its community. I see regularly  how a good pub can bring people together and help those in need.

Then secondly, like everyone, pubs have been hit by COVID and the rising costs which has seen many good, hearty boozers close. It's really sad and I think showing support where we can is important.

And thirdly, can you really beat a really good walk followed by a really good walk on a Sunday afternoon with your nearest and dearest?!
